Our clients include independent retailers, Home Depot, Loblaw, and Costco. Our vision is to be the Canadian market leader in the production and distribution of plant goods, to be an industry trend setter and innovative in our approach to business, to be the first choice with our customers and suppliers, and to attract and retain the best talent possible.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a Lead Section Grower at our Niagara-on-the-Lake facilities to help supervise and lead our growing teams in the day-to-day execution of plant growing functions. This facility primarily grows over 1000 varieties of perennials in 4" up to 2g size. This position is full time year-round with salary and benefits and is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in greenhouse or nursery production.

What Your Role Would Be

You will personally take responsibility for growing a section of crops on the nursery
You will assist our Head Grower by supervising a team of 2-4 other growers who in turn are supervising small crews
You will help our growing team organize their day, execute work safely, correctly, and efficiently, and help the team stay focused on key objectives
You will help the Head grower with other administrative functions such as team scheduling, record keeping, and training

Executing these functions well will help us develop effective teams, who in turn will produce excellent crops efficiently and on time, which helps us achieve our corporate Vision of being the Canadian market leader in our industry.

As the Lead Section Grower, your responsibilities will be to

Assume responsibility for growing and taking care of a section of plants in the facility
Manage and direct the other Section Growers on daily checking and irrigation of crops and their growing zones
Supervise general plant care activities (pruning, spacing, organizing crops)
Monitor pest scouting procedures, apply treatments, and keep accurate records
Assist the Head Grower in developing weekly treatment and crop protection plans
Provide guidance and training to new staff on our work processes
Assess crops with salable counts so that Sales can sell what you've grown

This is a dynamic, exciting role with lots of different elements to it. You are likely to be involved in many other elements of crop production and growing as you work with your team and other departments.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

If you know how to grow crops, are organized, and can effectively supervise people, then you're probably a good fit for this position.

Formal education is a benefit but not required. Knowledge of greenhouse mechanical and irrigation systems, as well as Argus software, is beneficial but not required. You will need a valid pesticide license. If you do not have one, we will pay for your training to get one.

Working Conditions

You’ll need to be able to perform typical greenhouse physical work (standing, bending, walking, lift 50lbs) in all weather conditions (cold, hot, rain, shine). You may have to work weekends and extended hours during busy seasons (ie. Spring/Summer).

Why you should apply

Our employees enjoy working at BTN! There are many opportunities for career advancement throughout the company. Many of our employees have worked here for 10-20 years or more. The company is privately owned and has a family feel to it. Our employees tell us that our commitment to their health and safety is strong, and they appreciate that. The crops we grow are beautiful and of high quality, and you can go home at the end of the day feeling good about what you have accomplished. BTN offers a competitive salary and benefits package.
